The Tripadvisor website has recently published the results of its annual Travellers Choice Award. In the top beach destination category, San Vito (Sicily) has been voted the best beach in Italy for the second year in a row. This selection is based on millions of reviews and opinions posted by travelers from all over the world.
San Vito lo Capo is a charming famous seaside town on the North West side of Sicily, within 1 hour of Palermo airport.
Almost three kilometres of fine white-sandy beaches and stunning crystal clear Caribbean like waters make it a paradise for families and those who enjoy swimming or just lounging under the sun. The area is of great natural interest, where you can be charmed by the landscape and the beauty of the many sea inlets immersed in the azure sea.
Toward the east there are high coastlines overlooking the sea, behind which starts the Nature Reserve of the Zingaro, which protects one of the most beautiful and integral coastlines of the island. Stretching for about seven kilometres until Scopello, where some scenes of the movie Ocean’s Twelve were filmed in 2004.
No less interesting is the western side of the coast, which is lower and rugged with reefs, caves and Mount Monaco which measures 532 metres high.
The town itself is a charming white Fishermans village with plenty of bars, restaurants and small souvenir shops, where you can purchase local delicacies.
In 2011 San Vito received maximum 5-sail acknowledgment from the Legambiente (the most widespread environmental organization in Italy) for its exceptional and widely recognized naturalistic value, their effort in maintaining its wonderful landscape, coastlines and developing at the same time a high level of tourism. Last but not least if you are in Sicily in September don’t miss San Vito lo Capo annual Couscous Festival.
